I'd really planned on doing another awareness page today, like last Thursday, but sometimes life gets in the way. Today, it was in a good way. I wrote yesterday about how I got in contact with my old high school classmate, and about setting up a Yahoo club for our class and the reunion. At the time, I wasn't sure how well it would go over... I'm always expecting the worst, I guess. But this time, things went right.
I was in the midst of sorting out yet more stuff from the back cupboards this morning, when the phone rang. Mom answered it, and it was for me, so she asked who it was. Turns out, it was my old classmate, so I untangled myself from sorting and picked up the phone and said hello.
It was so nice to hear a voice from the past! She was really impressed with the club and all, and said that they'd really wanted to do a website, but there was so much to do, and so few hands to help, that they really hadn't had the time, or a person with many skills in that arena to devote to it. So I guess I happened along at just the right time!
We talked for a few minutes, but I suspect she was at work, and we didn't stay on the phone long. Still, later this afternoon when I hopped back online, I had another e-mail from her, telling me how things with the reunion planning are going, answering a few questions I'd asked, and making a few arrangements to make the work I want to do on a class website much easier -- like e-mailing documents back and forth, so I don't have to scan and OCR them in. She said she wished I was still out there in California, so I could lend a hand with arrangements and all there, and I think that would have been fun.
Anyway, that was really a nice surprise, both to hear from her on the phone, and to know that the work I put into it last night was appreciated. Too cool!
Just yesterday afternoon -- before the mail came -- I was looking and looking and trying to find some category at Netscape's Open Directory (http://www.dmoz.org) where I'd be useful as an editor, but I never could quite figure out what I'd have the most background in. So along came the reunion letter, and there was the outlet I'd needed. Perfect timing!
Yes, things are getting better here... I've got a good deal of stuff packed, and the yard sale is two days hence; soon there will be a lot less clutter, and I can start packing in earnest. I can't believe it's only about two more weeks now until Jev graduates. Yay!!!!
