Boy, it's been a few days now since I've updated! But the good side of that is, there's a lot to write about!
Friday, Jev and I came back to Roanoke to fill out the final papers on the lease, and get the keys to our new home. We also stopped at the Saturn dealer, and he was going to show me what he'd been looking at.
We ended up test driving three different cars, and we decided we liked the last one well enough to put a deposit on it. Since they're preparing for the 2000 model year, they're "gearing down" on the custom 99 models, and it would likely take us quite a while to get one, if we could get one at all.
The car we picked wasn't 100% what we'd had in mind, but we're both really happy with it. We might not actually take it off the lot until Jev has his sign-on bonus later next month, but when he talked to his mom this afternoon, she sounded like she thought his dad might loan him the down payment. That way, we could get it once we're back from Missouri next week. We'll see.... For now we have the family piece of Chevette, which at least gets us where we're going.
Saturday was a long day, what with all the walking, the ceremonies (two), packing, driving, and unpacking again; but I'm glad I got to see Jev graduate, and I'd do it all over again, if I had the chance.
We got everything here from his dorm without a hitch, and though Jev's dad was really getting on my nerves that evening, after harping on the evils of loans, financing, and 90 days same as cash, we survived. Jev and I ran out for groceries and miscellaneous necessities after that, and his dad was thankfully asleep in the spare room when we got back.
Sunday morning, Jev's dad was up early. I took a bath while he and Jev talked a gbit more, and he was gone when I got out, already on his way back to WV. Hopefully he didn't hear my sigh of relief. It's not that I don't like him; just don't get him talking about finances when I'm around.
I think we hit the grocery store three times yesterday, and K-mart, and then Wal-Mart again today. Slowly but surely, we're collecting the things we need to make life a little easier. Shower curtains are good things, as are paper towels and laundry detergent. There are still tons of things we could use, but I think we can get by for now, until we get the rest of our belongings here and see what we have.
Today we went out and ordered a bed (after about three days of looking around at various brands and models), and Jev called for phone service this morning, so we should have those things reasonably soon. The air mattress his parents brought is a far cry better than two people trying to sleep on one twin-extra-long dorm mattress on a very unpadded floor, but thankfully we won't be needing that much longer. A real bed is going to feel wonderful! Now if only I'd remembered the mattress pad, while we were out buying sheets!
All in all, it's been a busy bunch of days, but I think it's been worth the effort. The new place is starting to feel like home already. We cooked dinner tonight, did laundry, made chocolate chip cookies, and now I think it's time for bed.
